© 2008 Sesame Workshop Chuck Close (1940- ) is an American artist specializing in HUGE "photorealist" close-up portraits and self-portraits. In 1988, at the peak of his career, Close became paralyzed. He regained partial use of his arms, and was able to return to painting after developing techniques which allowed him to work from a wheelchair. Artist Chuck Close is a wonderful example of an individual who has valued his abilities and who has used his abilities in his own best way. By not letting paralysis or being in a wheelchair stop his already successful career as an artist, Close demonstrates how a "can-do" attitude and approach to life can help us overcome obstacles in order to create even greater possibilities than before.
