can do

an animated machine with the words what can you do above it

We asked Can Do! Kids:

"If you could invent something to make the world a better place,
what would it be?"

Here's what they had to say!

tiny globe

"I would make make the world a better place by starting out with small things in my community, like saving the resources, then I would help in bigger ways like inspiring others to stop smoking, drinking, and causing fights. I just wish that the world would be as safe as decades ago. Earlier, you could leave your doors open, and nobody would rob you. Everybody, try to help your community by inspiring others, too."

"I think that just taking care of you in local parks would be better. If everyone cleaned their own mess up it would be clean and look better, but all I can do is pick up my own things and that is one step better! I also can brighten up someone's day by smiling at them walking by. Listening to what others have to say is important too - if someone brings up a topic, don't interupt, listen - they might have a point just like the next topic i have. Being nice to one another - it just makes everyone equal feeling wise. Being mean to someone makes you no better then them if they make fun of you first. If everyone was just nice to eachother no one would feel bad or angry and then they wouldn't do bad or bizare things to people who had nothing to do with them."

"My idea of making our planet a better place is to make people more informed on the everyday bullying that goes on in every school. I decided today thanks to the words of my parents to start a club at school who does just that - inform people about the bullies who once lived in your school. But i won't stop there. Now I've decided to make a club that keeps our children that go to our school and others away from drugs, alcohol, and cigarettes. Influencing the people around you is a good way to start making the decision of not taking drugs and other things that can ruin their lives.

3 years ago i read a book that concerned me about our planet, it read about how everyday we pollute our air, litter and destroy our once naturally beautiful land into a garbage dump. I started a club called earth helpers that started with 5 people and some hope. We would go around our school and pick up any garbage that Loiterers throw on our earth. Once that started with 5 students ended with 20! That just goes to show any kid can change the world with a little hope. Now I have decided to go to the Nursing home every once in awhile. "The ones who help the ones in need live longer." I decided to start after reading a story that influences on that in Chicken Soup for the Kids Soul. Every kid can make a difference, just believe you can and you can do anything."

"I would invent a few inventions, and they are listed below:

  1. A small cube that will turn into shelter with plumbing, heat, air conditioning, and electricity for homeless people.
  2. Calculators with fraction buttons and the numbers will go up to a trillion.
  3. A cube that has a lifetime supply of food for the homeless.
  4. A cube that has a whole new wardrobe in it.
  5. Stop drug dealing by becoming president and throw it away. Whoever gets caught will be thrown in jail."

"I would like to help poor people. I would invent a place that people could stay. The people would not have to pay for anything. They would have rooms and places for their kids to go and play. The place could help them get a job until they get enough money to buy a house they could stay there."

"I would make a computer like chip that is implanted in everybody's neck as a baby or something. If something was wrong with the mind, like an onset of depression or the beginnings of another mental illness, the chip would notify the parent or school so that that child could get the help he or she needs. If it just notified the child, things might not get done. This would help prevent suicide and tragedies like the shooting in Littleton, Colorado. It would have to notify the parents and teachers or something incase the parents didn't care that their child was in trouble."

"People need to respect our plants and flowers. Trees: Trees give us oxygen and if it wasn't for trees we woulden't be able to breath.People are cutting trees down and not replacing them with seeds for another tree to grow in place of the tree that has been cut down."

"I think what would make the world a better place would be if we tried our hardest to improve on youth violence and gang violence and just violence period. Another thing that would help make the world a better place is if we could make the schools have better test scores. No state should be better than another in test scores or school activities."

"To make the world a better place I will keep it clean it will have beautiful grass. The ground will never have no holes or bad things written on the ground. There even won't be drugs spread around. But most all people who in jail will have to be died. I don't mean no harm but that's how my things will have to be for all the good people who is doing good. Well as you can see I want my world to be safe and better place. Thank you. This by Shaquana."

"I can build a non-violent machine. The machine will take all the violence out the person in less than two hours. How it's going to work is that the person steps in that did something violent and gets to look at the future and the past, and if that doesn't change that person then the violent machine takes the vilolence out of them. The machine will be in every prison and jail. That would be my invention to change the world."

"I think the world could be a better place if everyone would chip in and do their part in the community. If everyone would be a little nicer to one another and stop worrying about what kinds of clothes they are wearing. If the world was coming to an end everyone would work together so it wouldn't. People need to get rid of the negative attitudes. The world would be a much better place if everyone could act in the ways of christ. They wouldn't have to be perfect because none is perfect. But that is just how I feel. Many other people many feel very very differnt but that is what I think."

"What I think that we can do to make the world a better place is to get more trained police out in the work force that will help a little on some of the crimes that are taking place in the world. Also another big issue is the number of hate crimes that we have in the world. That is what i think will make the world a better place. "

"My idea for making the world a better place: If I could explore the world, I would learn some other kinds of dancing from other cultures besides mine. I'm half caucasion & half filipino. I have tried my own culture dance called tiniklin. It's with 3 or 4 people, two of them holding bamboo sticks, stomping them on the cement boards and 1 or 2 persons dancing in between the bamboo sticks without getting their legs pinched in between the sticks. Very entertaining and can get very fast pace too. Also, I've tried country line dancing. I have watched many other kinds of dancing. My most recent one would be last year on Martin Luther King day. I went to an Indian Reservation to do some volunteer work for the day with my mom. I got to watch some traditional Indian Dancing. Pretty interesting, my mom wants me to take hula dancing too. But, I want to learn so many different ones too."
