Ideas for Using the Can Do! Web Site in Your Classroom

Below are some of the activities/features you'll find on this site, and ideas for how you might integrate them into your current curriculum.

For educators interested in the learning standards that these Can Do! web activities help meet, check out the link following each.

starThe Can Do! Ability Survey- an interactive survey of abilities, interests, and aspirations that students can fill out and submit online. Their responses will be posted on the site to inspire other students around the world. Even if your students don't fill out the survey, they can view the survey responses submitted by other visitors from around the world - a great way for students to learn about diversity, and the commonalities we share.

starDream Sharing - this is a simple interactive activity that allows students to learn a bit more about the hopes and aspirations of their classmates, themselves, and others around the world. This is a great opportunity for students to compare and contrast the hopes and dreams we share, and those that are unique to ourselves.

starCan Do! Writing - writing activities students can do in class and then submit to be posted on the Can Do! web site. This would be a great writing activity for almost any age or level of writing ability because the stories or poems written and submitted by kids can be as long or as short, as simple or as complex, as each student desires. The primary goal and purpose of this feature is to encourage kids to think about, and write about, the things they CAN do... despite their challenges.

Whether this is an activity parents do with their children, or teachers do in the classroom, this can be a great catalyst for discussing personal strengths, capabilities, and individual differences, as well as the attitudes that can help us overcome challenges.

starCan Do! People - A collection of brief, inspiring bios about people from the past and present who have demonstrated a Can Do! attitude and approach to life in order to overcome their challenges and reach their dreams. This feature would be another great catalyst for discussions about challenges and how attitudes can help us overcome our challenges and reach our goals. One idea: Through collaboration, classroom and/or ed. tech. teachers and school guidance counselors could use this page to launch a social studies/biography lesson about attitudes and challenges which would examine how society's attitude has created challenges for some people in the past, how our own attitude creates challenges for ourselves, and how our own attitudes and the attitudes of others can help us overcome challenges.
